Introducing the Cullens (or, The ‘Twilight’ movie is not even going to be a huge let down because I already know it’s going to suck)

November 13th, 2008 by Brandon

I’m on track to finish the fourth (and final) book in the Twilight saga. If you don’t know what the Twilight saga is, well… I’m sorry. Leave the house once in a while.

I haven’t followed much of what’s going on with the first movie that will be coming out next week. I’ve watched some trailers, but that’s about it. Today, while sorting through my RSS feeds regarding movies and entertainment, I noticed a headline about “the rest of the Twilight series” that caught my eye, so I clicked. Here’s part of what I read:

In “New Moon,” Edward leaves Bella, sending Bella into a depression and a friendship with another vampire. In the third book, “Eclipse,” that relationship triangle evolves, while evil empires begin to pursue Bella.

Another vampire? Really? I hope the site (The Hollywood Reporter — seems legit) is just reporting the news incorrectly. But based on the atrocities Hollywood committed on the Lord of the Rings franchise, I can only imagine…

But that doesn’t matter for the first book/movie, Twilight, which comes out next week. Like I said, I’ve only seen a couple of trailers. But let’s look at who’s putting this movie together…

The screenwriter for the film has done what? Party of Five? The OC? Ally McBeal?… seriously?

What about the actors? Bella was in Jumper (Oh goodness) and Edward played a minor role in one of the Harry Potters.

Has anyone else watched the trailers and felt like you’re watching a terrible teen-drama? That’s how I feel.

And as if all this weren’t bad enough, just look at this picture of the Cullens sitting at their lunch table:

Conclusion: They look really gay. Especially the guys.

    B-
I feel like playing devil’s advocate for this post, although I do feel strongly that this movie could be a huge let down. Nevertheless I am still VERY excited to see this movie.
First of all- you can’t judge a book by its cover. Nor should you judge a movie by a really bad photo or a poorly constructed trailer.
Also, you’ve read the book; you know that it is a bit of a “teen drama”, so of course the movie is going to come across that way.
You also have to take into account the audience they are trying to market. I don’t think this one is getting sent out to Academy to win an Oscar or anything… they just want to make sure that enough teenage girls want to see it again, and again (or maybe a 25 year old single, female, professional?)
As for the people putting this movie together- I don’t even remember Kristin Stewart (Bella Swan) in Jumper; she is more acclaimed for her roles in Panic Room and Into the Wild. And Robert Pattinson (Edward Cullen) is… well he’s hot. And he actually looks like he might bring some depth to the character. We shall see. The director Catherine Hardwicke won huge praises for the movie Thirteen which she directed and co-wrote (with Nikki Reed- who also stars in Twilight).
I also take great comfort in the fact that Stephenie Meyer, the author of the Twilight Series, collaborated in the movie’s creation. If it gets her stamp of approval then it must be relatively close to the book.
As far as The Hollywood Reporter goes, quite frankly that scares me. But I’m sure lots of Twi-Hard bloggers will set them straight.

The movie premiers in 6 days and I can’t wait. I hope you post your review and I REALLY hope it’s not as bad as you think it will be.

First of all - I feel like scolding you because I have avoided seeing this picture (which Shannon told me about weeks ago) like the plague for some reason (which I’m pretty sure only Shilo can understand) and now here it is! And I can’t stop staring at it because it’s like a forbidden fruit to me! Something I probably shouldn’t have admitted here in your blog, but there it is.

As usual, Shilo and I are in total agreement. I’m not delusional enough to think that there isn’t a possibility this movie isn’t going to be as good as I wish it to be. But it doesn’t diminish my excitement whatsoever. No need to repeat anything else Shilo pointed out….except that the Patz is hot - that always deserves repeating.

Up to this point, I have completely trusted Steph and she has never let me down. Ergo, if she’s pleased with the movie, I have a feeling I will be too. All I know is that one week from today all my speculation will be over!

And one more thing. To the Hollywood Reporter: Jacob? Vampire? Laughable!! You have effectively lost all credibility with a certain Brittany Warnock.

I read the title of the post & decided not to read it. Then I scrolled down & saw the picture & thought, what is Brandon doing talking about gay vampires? Seriously that’s what I thought.

Apparently makeup artists & set designers know how to do their jobs.

Now, I have heard of that series, but I thought that you had to be attracted to men to read the books…

I’d go Gay for Edward. Is that really so wrong? Apparently 47% of California doesn’t think so!
